The brain is one of the organs that is probably most affected by physical activity, did you know, for example, that four minutes of physical activity can give you increased focus for up to an hour afterwards? Here I will talk about how the brain is affected by exercise and how to make a quick buck from it aswell!
THE BRAIN IS ONE OF THE ORGANS MOST AFFECTED BY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
In the late 1990s, researchers in the United States discovered that when rats and mice were allowed to run free in their cages, the part of the brain where the memory center is located (hippocampus) grew.
Ten years later, it turned out that it was not just rats and mice that could run into more nerve cells and better memory – exactly the same thing happens to our brains too!
When we exercise, a number of chemical substances are secreted, and these substances have been shown to be able to strengthen almost all functions in the brain.
Physical activity thus has a positive impact on stress management, learning, memory, creativity, concentration and intelligence. In addition, an active life can reduce the risk of depression and anxiety and reduce the risk of dementia.
HOW MUCH DO WE NEED TO TRAIN FOR THE BRAIN TO BE AFFECTED?
Not much is needed to take part in all the positive effects for the brain. One walk a day has been shown to reduce the risk of dementia by almost 50 percent, and four minutes of physical activity can provide better concentration for up to an hour afterwards. There are very good reasons to get some exercise every day.
IMMEDIATE EFFECT IN THE BRAIN OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
You may be thinking about how long you need to exercise before your brain notices the positive effects? Do you need to train for several months or is the brain directly affected? I have good news here:
It does not take long at all for the brain to experience the positive effects of physical activity, but it is immediately noticeable. Physical activity has both long-term and immediate effects on memory.
A study in the USA showed that the participants with poorer condition who trained before a memory test received higher scores than the participants with good condition who did not train before the tests.
Physical activity also has an immediate effect on the brain in the form of the release of endorphins and dopamine, which gives a kind of feeling of happiness and more energy.
Have you ever postponed the cleaning at home, an assignment or a school assignment that you felt you really did not have the strength to handle?
So you go on a workout and all of a sudden you seem to have a lot of energy to get things done?
Then it’s endorphins and dopamine that you notice – when the whole world feels a little lighter!
WHICH EXERCISE FORM GIVES THE BEST EFFECT ON THE BRAIN?
Is there any form of exercise that is better than others when it comes to brain functions?
All forms of exercise have their advantages, not least considering the endorphins and dopamine that I mentioned earlier.
But for an optimal effect, you need to get your heart rate up and then it is high-intensity training that gives the best effect for your brain’s functions.
Another good form of training is group training with different steps and combinations, where you really challenge the brain and get lots of positive effects!
HOW TO EARN MONEY WITH TRAINING
So can you use your new-found focus and knowledge about traning to get an extra buck?
One way to use the knowledge you possess about training and turn it into extra income is by working as a PT, personal trainer. To work as a PT, you should have taken a course – and otherwise it may be wise to take one.
By taking a course, you get knowledge about not only training, but also pedagogical tips on how to best convey the knowledge to customers.
Some fitness centers require you to have some kind of diploma and many clients only go to PTs who have an education.
Another way is to lead workout groups at your local fitness center or gym. Instead of paying to participate in a class, which you actually master as well as the coach, you can get paid while you can move.
Many times you have to start with the lighter groups as training is not only about moving the body but also about being able to explain in a good way how and why the participants should do a certain movement.
Whether you are going to work as a PT or have group training, it is also good to have knowledge of the body’s anatomy.
TRAINING ON THE INTERNET
Today, there are many people interested in training who also make money through blogs and on YouTube.
If you have run several races, you can blog about it, and give tips on training methods, food and how to qualify for different races.
You can also write about when and how to book airline tickets and hotels before participating in the New York Marathon or the Girl Mile in Vienna. You can also create training videos that you upload to Youtube.
Either shorter films that show different techniques, from the right running step to how to train the plank correctly.
But you can also create inspirational films where you take the camera with you on a run – preferably in a big city or out in the wilderness.
